Step into the Scene

Step into the Scene

From blockbuster movies to long-running TV shows, Durham’s castles, coasts, and cobbled streets have played countless roles. Groups can visit the real star of the show across the county.

• Step into living history at Beamish Museum, where scenes from Downton Abbey (both the TV show and movie) were shot, using its authentic period streets and buildings to bring past eras to life.
• Durham Cathedral - Marvel at this UNESCO World Heritage Site that has doubled as Hogwarts in the first two Harry Potter films and transformed into Asgard’s palace in Avengers: Endgame, making the cathedral one of the most iconic cinematic interiors on screen.
• Raby Castle, Park and Gardens - Wander through the elegant medieval castle and deer park where scenes for ITV drama Victoria and Oscar winning Elizabeth were filmed, bringing royal history to life amid its grand halls and scenic grounds.
• The Durham Dales - Explore sweeping dales and dramatic landscapes that have featured in productions including Sam Mendes’ 1917, Netflix’s The Witcher and other dramas. With moorland, reservoirs and timeless views making the area a favourite for historical and atmospheric filming.
• Durham Heritage Coast - Wander along the rugged seascapes, where dramatic coastal scenes were filmed for detective TV drama Vera, cult classic Get Carter starring Michael Caine, and the smash-hit movie Billy Elliot.
