A Taste of Durham

A sense of place is more than just scenery, heritage and culture. The food and drink of an area provides that all important ‘taste of a place’ and creates lasting holiday memories.

And so from dale and vale, city and coast, delicious dishes are to be enjoyed at award-winning eateries famed for using local produce.

Local food heroes work hard to produce high quality ingredients, which are served up with a large dollop of pride at local eateries and attractions. From stotties (bread) to black bullets (sweets) and Bishop’s Best (beer) to a St Cuthbert’s Slice (cake), even the names of our food provide a talking point.

Built in 1360, inside Raby Castle’s magnificent kitchen it’s easy to see how, and where people of the past prepared, cooked and served food. Almostcompletely in its original medieval form, the kitchen holds a fascinating collection of Victorian cooking equipment and around the room runs a passageway within the thickness of the walls, used as a serving route and by the soldiers guarding the castle.

Nestled next to Durham Cathedral’s iconic cloister, you’ll find the Undercroft Restaurant. A Taste Durham award-winning restaurant, serving up a selection of homemade snacks and simple light lunches. Where else in the world can you enjoy a delicious cake or scone surrounded by the grand surroundings ofa UNESCO World Heritage Site?

After a busy day of sightseeing, teatime treats are on hand with sumptuous afternoon cream teas served in the surroundings of hotels, in the pretty and award-winning Café Bowes at The Bowes Museum, or within the medieval setting of Durham Cathedral.

Did you know...

Raby Castle’s medieval kitchen was in use for 600 years, until 1954, and in the kitchen you’ll find historic handwritten recipes on display.
