Redhills Durham miners Hall is Durham’s other cathedral. Redhills is the building where working-class community power literally changed Britain.
Redhills is a Grade II listed building dating from 1915. Its debating chamber, known as the “Pitman’s Parliament”, was named by Historic England in the 100 irreplaceable places list. It is ranked alongside the Palace of Westminster as one of the country’s top ten landmarks in England’s history of power, protest and progress. It was the democratic hub of the Durham Miners Association (DMA), and the heart of the Durham Coalfield. From Redhills, collective decisions were made which transformed the cultural and social fabric of the coalfield area.
Redhills stands as a symbol of the progress achieved through community enterprise. Located in Durham’s city centre, the hall is easily accessible from the mainline train station and is near the city’s UNESCO World Heritage Site. The building is a magnificent example of trade union architecture in Europe and has been recognised by Historic England as an ‘irreplaceable’ place.

A recently refurbished Redhills now has a new lease of life. It will be a place where community organisers and workers will rebuild hope. We are open for pre-booked events, such as performances, talks, and guided tours.
