The Auckland Project

Experience over a thousand years of history, art, culture and faith within the beautiful surroundings of The Auckland Project visitor destination.

Be one of the first through the historic doors of 900-year-old Auckland Castle, as it reopens later this year following a multi-million pound conservation project. Once home to the powerful Prince Bishops of Durham, the Castle’s State Rooms will be returned to their original Georgian Gothic splendour, while the Bishops’ private apartments will also be open to the public for the first time. Artwork on show will include the famous Jacob and His Twelve Sons by Spanish master Francisco de Zurbarán.

The Mining Art Gallery and Auckland Tower are also part of The Auckland Project visitor destination.

In development: Spanish Gallery – the first gallery in the UK dedicated to exploring the arts and culture of the Spanish world. Faith Museum – the first museum in England to explore faith in Britain and Ireland, from the past to the present day.
