The exhibition is a contemporary interpretation of the North’s most enduring story, the tale of St Cuthbert and one of the World's greatest books - its creation, its journey, its influence around the world and its especial symbolism for the people of the North East.
Visitors to the exhibition will see some of Britain’s most significant manuscripts and books alongside stunningly beautiful artefacts from Anglo-Saxon England drawn from national collections and those of Durham University and Durham Cathedral. The centrepiece is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see a selection of Cuthbert’s treasures including his sapphire ring, jewelled cross and travelling altar, together with the book that was written in his honour. The exhibition celebrates the region’s heritage with special events, music, theatre, talks, performances and fun family activities.
The Lindisfarne Gospels are on loan from the British Library in the summer of 2013 and will be displayed on Durham’s UNESCO World Heritage Site in Palace Green LIbrary.
