The Bishop Auckland Food Festival will take place over two days on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 April and celebrates the very best in Northern food and drink with over 160 stalls across the Market Place and Auckland Castle grounds.
BAFF 2014 will feature a whole programme of foodie events and activities, including celebrity chef demos, street entertainment and a children’s cookery school and food lab.
Simon Rimmer from Channel 4’s ‘Sunday Brunch’ will be doing two free cookery demonstrations on Saturday 26 April on the castle demo kitchen, after which he will sign copies of his books. Joining him will be CBeebies and ‘Incredible Edibles’ star Stefan Gates. He will be doing a free family-friendly demonstration each day featuring a mix of science, extraordinary cooking, and possible exploding ingredients!
Mark Lloyd, a foraging expert and former head chef of River Cottage, and Richard Fox an award winning food writer and broadcaster will also be in the castle demonstration kitchen along with other guest chefs across the weekend.
In the Market Place the Broil King chef will be barbecuing up a storm on the second kitchen and getting you ready for the alfresco dining season with a series of free demos, and award-winning butcher Johnny Pusztai will also be demonstrating how to make the ultimate BBQ food from scratch – sausages! Johnny will also be taking on junior all-comers in his ‘burger challenge’.
The Kids Club in the Town Hall will feature a children’s cookery school where all the budding cooks out there can get hands-on in the kitchen, creating simple but delicious recipes alongside one of our festival chefs, and the Food Lab, where science and cooking collides (and occasionally explodes!). Stefan Gates will be making an appearance each day in the lab.
CBeebies star Katy Ashworth will also be taking younger audiences on an edible journey through some of the best-loved children’s stories as part of ‘Eat That Book!’, a collaboration with the national children’s book centre, Seven Stories. All of these activities are free, but we would advise pre-booking for the Kids Club as places are limited. Free tickets for the Cookery School, Food Lab and Eat That Book are available on 03000 262626. Please note that children must be accompanied by an adult throughout each session.
At the heart of the festival are the free markets which will see the streets of Bishop Auckland and grounds of Auckland Castle burst into gastronomic life in a celebration of the best Northern food. The producers have all been hand-picked to guarantee quality and diversity, and there is a strong focus on provenance and products with a regional resonance. The emphasis remains on the food heroes and producers from the North East, but BAFF also welcomes back a visiting ‘Made in Cumbria’ market.
There will also be plenty of food-related street theatre and music throughout the weekend.
Park and ride will operate from Bishop Auckland College and Perfect Homes and Gardens (A6072) every 20 minutes from 9:30-16.30.
Please visit the festival website www.bishopaucklandfoodfestival.co,uk or call the contact centre 03000 26 26 26 for further information.
BAFF is a Durham County Council event supported by Bishop Auckland Town Council and The Auckland Castle Trust.
