It’s official – Durham is once again home to England’s Tourism Superstar.
After a month-long public vote, 87-year-old Durham Cathedral volunteer guide Lilian Groves has beaten off competition from ten other finalists to be crowned the 2016 winner of the national award, which recognises the dedication and passion of those working in the tourism industry.
Lilian had huge support from businesses across the county, the general public, and even celebrities including Jeremy Vine, George Clarke and Sting.
Lilian has volunteered at Durham Cathedral for more than 25 years and was nominated because of the enthusiasm, dedication and knowledge that she brings to the role, attributes that have won her praise from visitors from around the world.
Carrying out over a hundred tours a year, Lilian is regularly booked up to TWO YEARS in advance.
This is the second consecutive year Durham has won this prestigious award, Lilian following in the footsteps of Beamish Museum's Matthew Henderson who scooped the award in 2015.
Many thanks for your votes.
