The region recently celebrated two significant openings. The RSPB Saltholme Nature Reserve and Discovery Park is home to a huge variety of flora and fauna, while the Great North Museum: Hancock in Newcastle includes a large-scale interactive model of Hadrian’s Wall, as well as impressive natural history exhibits.

Once history lovers have taken in all that Durham has to offer, they can soak up the atmosphere at some of the North East’s ancient sites such as Bamburgh Castle, the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, Hadrian’s Wall and Alnwick Castle. The past is brought to life for younger visitors at Bede’s World and Preston Hall Museum, and they can learn about the first steam-worked public railway at Head of Steam, the Darlington Railway Museum. Discover the seafaring story of the Tees Valley at Captain Cook Birthplace Museum and the reconstructed 18th Century seaport at Hartlepool’s Maritime Experience. For a breath of fresh air, head to Roseberry Topping - one of Tees Valley's most famous landmarks.

There is even more family fun to enjoy right on Durham’s doorstep. Exciting, educational days out are to be had at award-winning science attraction Life Science Centre in Newcastleand the Blue Reef Aquarium on the stunning coastline near Tynemouth, while Alnwick Garden is a pleasure ground for children of all ages.

The National Glass Centre in Sunderland, BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art on the South bank of the River Tyne in Gateshead and mima, Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, are all within easy reach and showcase some of the region's contemporary culture in fascinating locations.

And if you’re a fan of the great outdoors, take a breath of fresh air at Kielder Water and Forest Park in Northumberland, or explore the miles of stunning scenery and coastline nearby.
