Durham has been voted in the UK’s Top-15 cities by influential travel magazine Conde Nast Traveller.
The beautiful and compact heritage city was ranked number 13 out of 15 cities in a poll of the magazine readers who voted Edinburgh the UK’s favourite city.
It is the latest in a long line of accolades for Durham. In 2007, Conde Nast Traveller readers voted it “Best City in the UK.” A BBC Radio Four listeners poll voted Durham Cathedral “Britain’s favourite building” in 2001 and travel writer Bill Bryson described Durham as a ‘perfect little city’ with the ‘best cathedral on Planet Earth’ in his book Notes from a Small Island (1991).
The autumn is a perfect time to visit Durham with the leaves changing colour on its heavily wooded riverbanks and soft light illuminating its wide open Dales and short but beautiful coastline.
The 20th Durham Book Festival gets underway in October (18-28) and the Durham City Christmas Festival once again offers markets, food halls, candle lit processions and carol services in Durham’s remarkable Norman Cathedral.
