The thrills and spills of competitive cycling will be returning to the streets of Durham this month as the city again plays host to the Halfords Tour Series. This year, the Durham race will kick off the competitive series on the evening of Tuesday May 24 and Durham is preparing for even greater crowds than the 3,000 who attended last year.

The race will be broadcast nationally on ITV4 the following night May 25 at 8pm.

Durham County Council Leader, Cllr Simon Henig, said “I am absolutely delighted that we have been chosen to start the race series this year and am sure we will offer an excellent challenge and experience.

“We have special plans in place to make it as easy as possible for thousands of people to come and join in this amazing spectator event.”

Visit County Durham Chief Executive, Melanie Sensicle said:  “The Halfords Tour Series, which kicks off in Durham later this month, is great news.  Events of this kind not only attract visitors to Durham, but also showcase the city on national TV.

“This is one of a number of exciting events happening in Durham this year, which include Brass, the Streets of Durham festival in August, the Durham Book Festival, International Cricket England v India in September and the return of Lumiere in November.

“Events play a key role in putting the county in the public eye. The more times people hear about and see Durham in the media the more likely they are to put us on their ‘must visit’ list.”

2011 Halfords Tour series is an eight round televised city centre cycling race series of unique, gladiatorial team based cycling. Ten teams of five top professional cyclists will take on each other and the challenges of the Durham circuit in their bid to become the top British cycling team and champions of The Halfords Tour Series.
