Durham’s Book Festival has unveiled its programme for the 20th staging of the city’s annual literary festival.

With almost 50 events across 10 days this year’s exploration of the literary world makes Durham the UK’s leading destination for book lovers this autumn.

Blending debates and discussions with interactive events, audiences have a unique opportunity to get involved in the festival, which takes place from 18 - 28 October. There are also three days of free book-based, hands-on activities for children during October half-term.

Among the festival highlights is an appearance by world famous travel writer Bill Bryson who will be in conversation with four contributors to Seeing Further, a lavishly illustrated book, created to celebrate the 350th anniversary of the Royal Society, and edited by Bill. Joining him in discussion will be biographer Richard Holmes OBE; science writer and broadcaster Georgina Ferry; award-winning science writer Philip Ball; and the President of the Royal Society, Lord Martin Rees. (Tuesday 19 October, 6pm)

The festival will also welcome prominent thinkers in politics, history, society and the environment to talk about issues affecting us all. Visitors travelling to the Durham Book Festival from outside North East England can benefit from Durham Deals, online vouchers that guarantee great savings at accommodations – including 3 nights for the price of 2 – 25% off the bill, discounts on eating out and 2-for-1 entry to visitor attractions.
