Laid Back Living

For some, being at one with nature is the perfect way to spend a short break, so what could be better than a morning's fishing? Famous for its trout fishing, Derwent Reservoir is a picture postcard coloured lake, so sit back, relax and let your rod do the work!

For something a little more bracing, head east to take in the sea air at Durham Coast. Walk the coastal path which leads you through a wonderful mosaic of natural, historical and geological features with dramatic views along the way.

Spend a leisurely afternoon in the historic parkland of Whitworth Hall Country Park with resident deer, ornamental lake and Victorian walled garden. Stroll around the gardens of the magificant Bowes Museum and the walled gardens of Raby Castle in Teesdale in the Durham Dales, or marvel at the magnificent Auckland Castle in the Vale of Durham.

An afternoon at Durham County Cricket Club's Riverside Ground will give you the chance to watch great cricket amidst the backdrop of Lumley Castle.

Durham City is the perfect location to end your day of outdoor relaxation. Take a tranquil riverside walk around the inspiring Durham Cathedral and Castle peninsula, stopping off to explore the beautiful gardens of Crook Hall, or drift leisurely along the river in a rowing boat.
Finish the day with a relaxing meal at one of Durham's many inviting restaurants, many of which are members of the new TasteDurham quality scheme.
