Durham keeps the faith

Durham’s connection to religious faith spans 1,300 years, embraces all corners and has shaped the county’s rich heritage. At its core is Durham City’s UNESCO World Heritage Site where magnificent Durham Cathedral has been a place of pilgrimage for centuries. Today, Durham is a place where all faiths are celebrated, and fascinating stories are waiting to be discovered.

• Follow in the footsteps of the northern saints on one of the six Northern Saints Trails. These signposted walking routes appeal to visitors of all faiths or none, with coach groups also able to also explore incredible attractions and heritage sites along the way.

• Discover how faith has shaped lives and communities for thousands of years at England’s first Faith Museum, part of The Auckland Project. Get up close to precious objects from different religions, along with contemporary pieces reflecting the diversity of multi-cultural Britain today.

• Explore Durham’s UNESCO World Heritage Site of Durham Cathedral and Durham Castle, which formed a power base for the Prince Bishops of Durham during the medieval period.

• Visit the shrine of St Cuthbert and the Tomb of the Venerable Bede at Durham Cathedral, which has been a place of pilgrimage for 1,000 years.

• Browse Buddhist religious material including beautiful textiles and talismans at Durham University's Oriental Museum.
