Good food is an essential ingredient for any day out or holiday and you’ll certainly not go hungry in Durham. Our local food heroes work hard to produce high quality ingredients, which are transformed into delicious seasonal dishes in the county’s award-winning eateries and attractions.

• Experience ‘plot to plate’ in action at The Auckland Project in Bishop Auckland. Fruit and vegetables from the restored 17th century walled garden are served in Auckland Castle’s café The Bishop’s Kitchen, the nearby tapas restaurant El Castillo, in the Spanish Gallery and the Park Head Hotel.

• Discover the flavours of yesteryear at Beamish, the Living Museum of the North. From fish and chips cooked in beef dripping to moreish treats from the Edwardian Bakery and 1900s sweet shop, you will be spoilt for choice.

• Learn how people prepared food many centuries ago at Raby Castle, which boasts a magnificent medieval kitchen with handwritten recipes on display.

• After a busy day of sightseeing, teatime treats are on hand with indulgent afternoon teas served in the surroundings of your hotel, the elegant Café Bowes at The Bowes Museum or within the medieval setting of Durham Cathedral at The Undercroft Restaurant.

Did you know...

At Beamish Museum you can try coal ice cream inspired by its 1900s Pit Village, made using black vanilla Italian gelato with popping candy. But watch out, as it’s certain to turn your mouth black!
