Some of Durham's top attractions and places to eat and stay were in the spotlight last night (Tuesday 22 November) after picking up top gongs at the North East Tourism Awards.

An incredible fourteen awards were handed out to tourism businesses across the county, with a range of attractions and accommodation providers scooping six Golds, two Silver, five Bronze and one Highly Commended award across eight of the fifteen categories.

Who were the winners?

Beamish Museum

Much-loved Beamish - The Living Museum of the North picked up gold in the Large Visitor Attraction of the Year category for the third year in a row.

England's largest open air museum, Beamish shines a light on the past with visitors able to step back in time to see what life was like in North East England in the 1820s, 1900s and 1940s during a packed day out for all the family.

And there's a bright future ahead for the Museum too, with work starting on a new 1950s town and upland farm, as well as additions to the 1820s landscape including a Georgian Coaching Inn where you will be able to stay overnight.

Bowlees visitor Centre

There was high praise too for Bowlees Visitor Centre in the Durham Dales, winning Gold in the Small Visitor Attraction of the year award.

A great base for exploring Teesdale, Bowlees is in the heart of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, near to Low and High Force waterfalls and surrounded by rolling fields that boast some of the best hay meadows in England.

The Visitor Centre has all you need to make your visit to this breathtaking part of North East England a memorable one, and there's also a café, gift shop, outdoor picnic seating, a stargazing hammock, nature trail, mud kitchen and an art gallery displaying works by local artists.

Rockliffe Hall

The quality of the county's accommodation was also highlighted at last night's ceremony. Five star Rockliffe Hall claimed Gold and recently extended Ramside Hall took silver in the Large Hotel of the Year Category.

There was gold too for Mill Granary Cottages in the Self-Catering Provider of the Year category, with The Old Stables at Knitsley scooping Silver in the same category.

Luxury countryside retreat Bracken Hill Farm Cottage picked up two awards; Silver in the Self Catering Property of the Year, and bronze for Dog-Friendly Business of the Year, the same category where the South Causey Inn won the gold award - proving there's no need to leave your four-legged friends at home when thinking about your next break.

Durham University Catering were awarded Bronze in the Taste Award for the quality of the food at Durham Castle and Cafe on the Green in Durham City, and Durham University also won Bronze in the Sustainable Tourism category.

Rockliffe Hall picked up their second award of the night with Gold in the Business Tourism Provider of the Year category, with Event Durham (Durham University) and Seaham Hall scooping Bronze and Highly Commended in the same category.

All in all a wonderful night for Durham, shining a light on the county's top tourism offer, and highlighting just why you should choose Durham for your next short break.
