There are a few buildings which loom out of the darkness of history to present a challenge to us in the present, to baffle us with a sense of mystery which no amount of reasoning can resolve. The Saxon church at Escomb is one such building. When was it built? Who built it and why? How has it survived so long? A date of construction can be tentatively put at around AD670, making it an early Saxon church with considerable Celtic influences. Look out for Roman inscriptions, sundials and altar stone.

If locked, a key is available for visit (from 26 Saxon Green - behind church). Please ring in advance if bringing a party/tour to the church. The key is available all year round 7 days a week during hours of daylight.
