Brancepeth Castle Golf Club is situated in the delightful village of Brancepeth about 4 miles south west of Durham City. The course was established in 1924 to the design of Harry S. Colt, one of Britain's foremost designers. It is recognised as one of the best courses in the North of England and is a regular venue for Durham County matches and from time to time national events.
The castle is a dominant feature on almost half of the holes and the ravines which intersect the course, make for a series of challenging shots. The signature hole is the 9th, a par of 3 or 200 yards, known as the Garden Hole because it occupies the area formally taken up with the formal garden for the castle. It is played to a narrow green below the castle with a Blue Atlantic Cedar to negotiate to reach the green. In fact the 5 par 3 holes are the secret to making a good score at Brancepeth but they are tricky and can easily destroy a score.
The generous acreage on which the course was created was the deer park for the castle and the clubhouse was tastefully formed from the castle stables to emphasise the origins of the Club.
