This is a small self catering youth hostel. Built of sandstone 400 years ago, formerly an inn, cafe and shop, it has been welcoming hostellers for over 70 years.
The hostel was refurbished at the start of this millennium to improve the level of comfort and retain the historical legacy and character. A new heating system was installed in the winter of 2009/10 providing a welcoming warm environment and an efficient drying room. With a capacity of 29 beds, the hostel provides all the essentials a countryside visitor needs. There is a homely dining area served by a well appointed kitchen, a relaxing lounge with stone flagged floor and coal fire. A large sheltered garden with trees, picnic tables, a summer house and camping provision.
Nestled in the foothills of The North Pennines and surrounded by heather moorlands, fields of grazing cattle and sheep, ribbons of streams and woodland with the adjacent Derwent Reservoir. Walking, cycling, golfing, sailing, fishing and simply appreciating the quiet natural beauty are some of the many activities this diverse environment offers the 'hosteller'.
In 2012 the hostel will be open 31st March until 28th October and is available to rent as a whole outside of these dates.
