Things to See and Do
History and heritage can be found across County Durham. The magnificent internationally famous Durham Cathedral and Castle World Heritage Site is a must see on any visit to Durham. And if you’re seeking culture then you won’t want to miss the fine and decorative art collections inside The Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle. We are also ideally located for visiting fantastic events like Kynren (June-Sept)....and don't forget the return of Lumiere, the UK's largest light festival, returning to Durham this November.
If you want to be active and get outdoors, on the doorstep is the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – a UNESCO Global Geopark and home to 16 Dark Sky Discovery Sites. The area is perfect for walking and cycling. The North Pennines is also home to High Force, one of England’s most impressive waterfalls.
Hamsterley Forest is a short drive away where there is no shortage of options when it comes to activities with waymarked walks, cycle routes and horse-riding trails for all levels of fitness and ability.
Further afield you’ll find breath-taking views and more routes around County Durham’s stunning countryside and coastal areas.

Guest Reviews
Thank you for a comfortable stay with perfect access to so many wonderful places in the area; from waterfalls to purple moorland and beautiful beaches to historic places. Hadrian’s Wall was a highlight and Beamish is an inspiring place, rich in heritage to be remembered. Our welcome was warm and friendly and we had everything we needed.

We have had a fab week. Weather has been fantastic with blue skies and plenty warm sunshine. We have walked our socks off visiting High Force, Kielder water, Hamsterley Forest, Waskerley Way (C2C), Tanfield Railway and Causey Arch. Fantastic views, excellent location and really enjoyed watching the horses and the barn owl hunting in the fields

Lovely cottage with wonderful views and great hospitality. Up here to visit family and some old memories. Durham Cathedral, Beamish, Hadrian’s Wal, Cragside and Gibside are all must sees. A walk in the Durham Dales rounded off our holiday.
